1. DHEA-S is useful for the diagnosis of adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal carcinoma and for the determination of the cause of hirsutism, virilization and polycystic disease. In addition, it is sometimes used as an aid to the monitoring of therapy involving DHEA supplements for anti aging treatments.
2. It should be noted that the reference intervals stated are normal values in healthy individuals and may not be appropriate for patients on DHEA therapy.
3. Falsely increased results may be seen in patients on high doses of biotin (i.e. > 5 mg/day). Samples should only be collected from these patients at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration so as to avoid potential interference.
