1. The IgM result should not be used as a sole determinant of a current or recent infection. The result should be used in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures (e.g. virus isolation or detection of viral nucleic acid by PCR). |
2. If an acute infection is suspected, suggest a second sample 14-21 days later and test for both IgG and IgM antibodies to look for seroconversion or a significant rise in antibody level. |
3. Results IgG detection in neonates must be interpreted with caution, since maternal IgG is transferred passively from the mother to foetus before birth. IgM assays are generally more useful indicators of infection in children below 6 months of age. |
