The nicotine metabolites (principally cotinine) test is intended as an aid in differentiating between smokers and non- smokers, and for the management of detoxification of smokers. Studies have shown that non-smokers have serum concentrations of less than 25 ng/mL using this test. Slightly increased levels may be found in non-smokers who are exposed to tobacco smoke on a routine basis.
